Michael Chia Artist's Statement

This series of works provides an unorthodox view of an urban landscape. Depicting a surreal and dreamy mood of being a bystander in Asian cities. Standing beside me, observing the world in slow motion. The viewer is confronted with a multitude of colour images in motion. Visions that could be imaginary but captured live ¿ in real time with slow exposures. Slowing down time, the person is drawn into partaking of the dream. Creating an automatic process of reading and collecting information, but not necessarily absorbing or digesting it. The question ¿ ñWhat ƒ.?î arrives. The viewer is challenged to use their imagination. The photographs capture a moment of a space in time with vibrant colours. Faced with the images, the bodyÍs senses are awakened when itsÍ logic is filled with thoughts and emotions. An interpretation sets in. The act of interpretation becomes a visual feast for the eye. The need to search for an understanding. The double subconscious reactions interact like a marriage of an odd couple to create symbiosis.
