Kim Wan

Artist's Statement
The source of my work is the experience gained from day-to-day life and the imaginative, intuitive and analytical processes I use to translate those experiences into paintings.
Each painting has its roots in a lived experience. A recent body of work has its origins in a visit I made to Spain in the autumn of 2004. These paintings, ďThe Terror is the BullÍ, are based on a conversation I had in a bar about bull-fighting. I wanted to convey the passion and the drama of the fight.
The colours I used are primarily a bright orange-red. This is the colour of the banners and signs you see everywhere in LondonÍs Chinatown. This colour has a personal significance for me in that my father came from the Far East and my family name is Chinese.
Painting is making thoughts visible. In the case of my own work, I would say that painting is making thoughts and emotions visible and in that sense, my painting is indistinguishable from my daily life.
