Artist's Statement

The dynamic between the qualities of a painted image and the qualities of the physical structure this representational surface occupies, has been instrumental in forming the discussion in my work. What has resulted is work in which the distinction between the two elements is perhaps more ambiguous than is traditional, with the representational qualities of the image becoming structural, and the structural qualities of the ground playing into and merging with the image. I am interested in a structureÍs capacity to contain certain perspectives, angles and drawn qualities and its propensity to lend itself to a particular image. I am equally interested in the way an image lends itself to a three dimensional structure. The two elements are sometimes pitted against each other in competition, or in attempt to create an equilibrium. Conversely the two elements can work in harmony tightening the language that is being used in a piece of work with the structure reinforcing image and vice versa. Such permutations comprise the negotiations I am undertaking. I am still very engaged in and excited by the idea of the construction of structure and the construction of representation.
