I am developing a project based on pictorial choreography. This is the direction of the movements of performers in silence to create an aesthetic of moving images alone without the need for sound. This research has manifested itself in a series of scripts set in proscenium stages, narratives detail the characters movements against a timeline of seconds. I come from a tradition of tableaux vivants, moving paintings and stage movement within opera and ballet.
Models I look to are the opening sequence of the Wright/Ivanov Nutcracker at Covent Garden where characters are manipulated to produce narrative action and visual aesthetics with the minimal of pure dancing. Melodrama of the 19th Century where choreography and set is used to create falling temples, the illusion of travelling within a landscape as well as shipwrecks is also part of my research as is Peking opera where movement is so detailed as to give a sense of movement within a location against a small, neutral platform without background.
