Artist's Statement
|
My perception of the relationship between time and space is critical to my understanding of western and eastern cultures and contemporary art.
It is vitally important that I pursue my creative work in as uninterrupted and concentrated a manner as possible so as to realize my identity as a Chinese sculptor within a very exciting contemporary context. I am devoted to the activity of making sculptures and installations My work comes from a strong inner energy and necessity. It has its own momentum, imagination, reflection and intuition, physical impulse, sensitivity to the flow of spaces, the compulsive activity of the hand. These are all-important to and integrated in my sculpture activity. My work is process-oriented, meaning that its outcome is realized through the ritual and the physical energy of making: the measurement of spaces, the sanding of the painted surface, the sketching of construction, the conversation between west and east. Going to my studio every day to work is a discipline and ritual for me, an opportunity for growth. It is an essential part of the journey. I see my activity as a kind of search, one that involves a perpetual repetition, a diary to be entered daily.
I am interested in creating environments that provoke a sense of spatial displacement. Walking into one of my site-specific installations, one will notice a respect for the presence of empty space, a value that I absorbed through my exploration of Chinese art.
