Artist's Statement

I am a sculptural and installation artist who uses ceramics as her medium. Each piece of my art reflects the passions that I have in life; nature, history, the ocean, travel and the interplay of each object with it's environment. I am especially interested in simple and organic-based forms, some of which can be combined to make larger installations. Each work is meticulously designed and then handcrafted using a combinaion of wheel thrown forms, coiling and clay slabs, which are then altered.

My choice of clay depends on how large the structure is and what exactly I am trying to say through my work, although, I do like to go against the norm and see how far I can push various clays. Many of my pieces are highly burnished as this results in extremely tactile forms and although this is a very time consuming process, I find the meditative movements very relaxing. I have always been drawn to the various smoked fired techniques and recently, I have begun experimenting with the effects that smoke, heat and fire will create on the ceramic canvas.

Some of the spectacular results I have obtained from these firings is a metallic or bone effect.Of course a considerable amount of planning goes into the decoration design of each piece, but by using smoke firing techniques there is also a significant element left to chance. For me that sense of surprise is definitely a large part of the attraction, especially as my final forms tend to be very controlled.
