Chiu Kim Lee

Artist's Statement

I having recently finishing a Fine art BA HONS degree, I momentarily based in Wales but shortly be returning to Manchester to become an artist based there.

My recent work focuses on identity and culture, I explore my British Chinese identity through; the fusion of traditions and values from two different cultures, this enables me to explore and understand the concept of identity. Additionally I am looking into the significance of Chinatown, its characteristics and the importance of the act of eating in the restaurant as a family tradition. I work on extracting the visual culture and reconstructing the sources I use to give a greater integrity to the Chinese visual culture, by presenting the imagery in a new context, whilst also exploring personal aspects of my life pertinent in concepts concerned with integrating cultural issues.

Helen Chadwick and Frida Kahlo have been an inspiration for me as they explore identity. Other influenced include Chinese visual culture and Chinese cinema, particularly Wong Kar-Wai’s In The Mood For Love, anime, and experiences of china town, contemporary artists who are British Chinese working with similar subject matter are also influential as it is beneficial to gain the insight others exploring a related content.
