Statement
|
Yumi Hara Cawkwell studied medicine in Japan and practised as a psychiatrist for eight years before moving to the UK in 1993. In 1999, she graduated in music from City University in London with a first-class honours degree, and has completed her PhD in composition at City University under Rhian Samuel in 2005.
Her groundbreaking works challenging geographical boundaries and the divisions between genres gained critical acclaim and several awards, and she was a finalist in the British Composer Awards 2006. Her music has been commissioned and performed by leading contemporary music ensembles such as PianoCircus, Ensemble Bash, OKEANOS and Keynote+ at major festivals including FuseLeeds, Corsham Festival and The Cutting Edge, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. She is currently working with Steve Howe (guitarist of Yes, ASIA).
As an experimental vocalist/keyboard player, she has recorded with David Toop, performed with respected musicians such as Charles Hayward, and is currently collaborating with David Cross (ex-King Crimson electric violinist) and Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine Legacy bassist). She is also active as an art music/experimental DJ, and since 1996, has been a member of the performance-art girlband Frank Chickens. She is a Lecturer in Music at the University of East London.
