In 2006 Chinese Arts Centre
carried out research for Arts
Council
England to establish EAST (East Asian Strategic Training). The idea
for
the scheme came from the disproportionately low number of applications
from East Asian artists to Grants for the arts. Since the start of the
scheme Arts Council England has already noticed an increase in
successful grants for arts applications from East Asian artists since
EAST started. In 2007/2008 EAST is delivering a range
of workshops, seminars, information and events to support and develop
the careers of East Asian Artists.
The Eastonline website was established in 2006 and has
grown at a
phenomenal rate quickly establishing itself as an important information
source for artists of East Asian descent who are based in London. The
website contains an extensive database of artists and organisations,
alongside an amazing resources section which offers invaluable
information and support to artists.

The showcase is a celebration of performance work by East Asian artists based in London. Six companies working in theatre, spoken word, dance and music will perform extracts of their tour ready work to give promoters an insight into the range and talent available. In addition, the showcase will be a chance to meet peers, discuss issues around programming diverse work and, hopefully, book your next season. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Each year the ITV Theatre Director Scheme (formerly the Channel 4 Theatre Director Scheme) will provide three directors with the opportunity to spend one year training at a regional theatre. The directors will work in all departments from production and fundraising to artistic programming. The scheme provides exceptional training for the directors and artistic directors of the future.
In 2010 the scheme will have been running for 50 years and can claim an impressive list of past recipients. Many ex-trainees have been or are currently artistic directors of the UK’s leading theatres. They include Michael Boyd (Artistic Director, RSC), Vicky Featherston (Artistic Director, National Theatre of Scotland), Rupert Goold (AD, Headlong), Dominic Hill (AD, Traverse, Edinburgh), Nicholas Kent (AD, Tricycle), Adrian Noble and Trevor Nunn.

Chinatown Arts Space presents
Classic Film, Contemporary Score (UK/China)
In partnership with ROH2 at the Royal Opera House
A classic silent movie from China, Song of the Fishermen (Yuquang qu, Shanghai, 1934) will inspire four of the most exciting British Chinese composer/musicians in the UK: Chi2 (Liz and Sarah Liew), Jiang Li and Kimho Ip, to compose and perform together the world premiere of a new contemporary score accompanying a special screening of the film.
Song of the Fishermen enjoyed success as the first social-realist film in the history of Chinese cinema, and won the first international prize for a Chinese film at the 1935 Moscow Film Festival. The film is an emotional story of social injustice full of action and melodrama, offering an exciting challenge to the contemporary interpretative vibrancy of British Chinese musicians.

AS PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE COMMISSION ANNOUNCED
As part of the Chinatown Arts Festival 2008: Five Circles, London based arts organisation Chinatown Arts Space (CAS), and Chinatown’s principal landowner, Shaftesbury PLC are working in creative partnership to commission two major new pieces of public art for London’s Chinatown.
Open to all East Asian* artists worldwide (including the UK), this is a substantial sculpture commission worth £20,000

Are you a Chinese person in London who was born in the Year of the Rat? I want to hear from you! I’m writing a piece for the BBC London website for Chinese New Year, where I’m interviewing ‘rats’ of different generations - ie those turning 36, 48, 60 etc - about their experiences of celebrating CNY (as I am a rat myself) and what being a rat means.
It’s for an online piece, with a couple of hundred words and a small photo of each interviewee. The interview wouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes and of course I can go meet you to do the interview, or it could even be done over email if that’s easier.

In a bold and innovative move, B3 Media, backed by Film4, Binger Film Lab and Skillset, has launched B3 FeatureLab, which will ‘supercharge’ four feature film scripts from black and minority ethnic filmmakers with a track record in film, TV, radio, the visual arts and new media.
B3 FeatureLab is backed by influential artists such as Turner prize-winning British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen, and award-winning director of HBO’s Life Support, Nelson George, who will bring their experience and expertise to the project.

A huge duck with a foxes head, a Scouse Buddhist monk, an interactive wigwam-igloo and Indian woman dancing to gospel and techno… just some of the characters, flora and fauna inhabiting artist Kai-Oi Jay Yung’s Paradise Stories exhibition.
Liverpool’s transformation and mankind’s endless pursuit of happiness have inspired Yung to create a unique two venue multi-sensory exhibition that employs a mixture of art forms to explore the quest for utopia, inviting visitors to find a sanctuary from reality and reflect on the city’s journey to current day European Capital of Culture renewal.

Joe Kennedy can’t believe his luck, when he goes to work in China and finds himself treated as a celebrity. Lovely “Judy” (Jennifer Lim), for example, seems ready to meet his every need, and as a “foreign expert”, he’s constantly pampered by his boss, Mr Wu. But his interest in Judy leads him into an underworld of danger and murky tradition, and Joe discovers that China is not changing as quickly as Mr Wu would have him believe.

Korean-born artist Francesca Cho www.londonkoreanlinks is exhibiting work in two group shows, in London and Bergamo, this month. The London show, Sacred, in the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre London Bridge (near the Financial Times offices in Southwark Bridge Road – two minutes’ walk from Tate Modern – is to mark World Religion Day (celebrated on the third Sunday in January).

Triparks
A project of Aune Head Arts with Somerset Art Week and Allenheads Contemporary Arts
About the project
Triparks is a collaborative project that will explore links between three National Parks, Dartmoor, Exmoor and Northumberland. Three lead artists and three early career artists are being commissioned to develop artworks during residencies in one of the three parks (two artists will be resident in each park).
Artists resident on Dartmoor will be hosted by Aune Head Arts, those on Exmoor will be hosted by Somerset Art Week and those artists in Northumberland will be hosted by Allenheads Contemporary Arts.
We are looking for artists who work in any artform, including sonic and performing artists, who are able to demonstrate both a quality of work, an ability to work sensitively and openly with others and who are able actively to engage audiences. In addition we will be bringing in an evaluator a web programmer and an exhibition curator/designer. The early career artists will be offered professional peer mentoring.
Following our usual practice (visit www.auneheadarts.org.uk for details of previous projects) we have kept the artist brief very open to allow work to develop in ways that we might not have anticipated.

The Filming East Festival is going on right now! Festival Director and EAST Filmmaker/ Artist Xiaoxiao Sun would like to invite everyone along.
Filming East Festival is a charitable event supported by the Oxford City Council and sponsored by the UK Film Council. The purpose is to let people in the UK take a closer look at China.
This Saturday 27 October, we are hosting the biggest event of the Filming East Festival at Keble College. Throughout the day, we will be screening a total of 4 documentaries about China, shining lights on all social aspects. At 4:00pm, the festival will reach its climax by announcing the One Minute Award winners after playing 16 excellent minute-long short films. Also featured in this ceremony is the jury panel discussion, from the most cutting edge film experts from UK and China, including Prof. Chris Berry and Director Hugh Purcell. International award-winning fiction feature, Celluloid Dreams, will be played in the evening. Refreshments of authentic Chinese snacks will be served free during intervals.
